Biases on Archaeomagnetic Dating Using Global Paleoreconstructions

ABSTRACT Archaeomagnetic dating is a valuable chronometric method for burnt archaeological artefacts. However, because of lack of global homogeneus archaeomagnetic data, the applicability of this technique remains limited in many areas, particularly in many equatorial and southern hemisphere regions. In this work, we address the challenge of using global archaeomagnetic models in regions with limited data. We investigate their use as dating reference curves and explore the potential errors that may arise when dating in these areas where the local‐scale geomagnetic field is poorly constrained. We developed a synthetic tests to assess the impact on dating results when using different global models in such areas. The observed results highlight the critical importance of having well‐defined archaeomagnetic models in order to use them as reliable dating tools.
