Resourcefulness and resilience: jugaad in the lives of middle-aged women

This exploratory study investigates the creative problem-solving strategies-specifically jugaad-employed by middle-aged women as they navigate the complexities of balancing work, home, financial, and health-related responsibilities. The research aims to understand how women adapt and innovate amidst response to resource constraints to meet competing demands across life domains. A cross-sectional survey for the pilot study was conducted with a sample of 20 women aged 40 and above, born and raised in India but currently residing in diverse urban settings around the world. By focusing on this group, the study aimed to generate preliminary insights into the adaptive behaviors and coping mechanisms shaped by cultural context and lived experiences. Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire capturing both quantitative (Likert-scale and multiple-choice) and qualitative (open-ended) responses on their use of "jugaad"-creative problem-solving strategies-in managing work, home, finances, and health. Data were anonymized, and quantitative responses were analyzed using regression and correlation methods. While qualitative responses were thematically examined to enrich understanding of participants' lived experiences. Findings revealed that age, health concerns, and financial pressures were significant predictors of the use of resourceful strategies - jugaad. Those aged between 40 and 50 were more likely to utilize time management techniques and low-cost solutions. Age, health, and financial pressures significantly impacts the adoption of these strategies. Women relied on health-focused problem-solving strategies. Resourcefulness in the workplace extends to financial decision-making, structured home management enhanced health, and adaptive childcare strategies demand increased effort in meeting unexpected responsibilities.
