Tajriba: An interview with Dr. Zarin Fatima on experiential knowledge in medicine

Abstract To investigate the role of tajriba , or experiential knowledge, in the Islamic world, scholars have turned to philosophically oriented Arabic texts engaged in theorizing knowledge. Few scholars have studied medical texts bearing traces of practice, like case histories and marginalia. And fewer still acknowledge the ongoing lives of tajriba in a medical tradition known as Unani medicine in South Asia. However, the work of ethnographers and practitioners is part of this longue-durée history, and engaging with their voices has revealed surprising continuities and painful absences. In this sonic interview, I take a nonlinear approach to understanding tajriba as experiential and embodied knowledge beyond the text, layering together my reflections on this scholarship; my interview with Dr. Zarin Fatima, a practitioner of Unani medicine; and my own practice of tuning the sarangi , a musical instrument. Working in the intimate medium of sound, I rely on my own embodied knowledge while inquiring into the history of tajriba as a concept.

Few scholars have studied medical texts bearing traces of practice, like case histories and marginalia.
