Exploration of superoleophobic multi-bionic microstructures on cemented carbide surface for high-efficiency reduction of workpiece removal energy in turning

This work explored green, durable and superoleophobic multi-bionic microstructures (MM) on cemented carbide tool surface for high-efficiency reduction of workpiece removal energy ( WRE ) in VMQL turning. Design of MM was conducted considering the characteristics of VMQL turning and different biological structures. Two types of MM such as low-adhesive superoleophobic MML and high-adhesive superoleophobic MMH were acquired using green preparation method. Morphology features and durable superoleophobic behaviors were examined for both MML and MMH. WRE was modeled incorporating the effects induced by the wear evolution of tool. The influences of MML and MMH on tool wear VB and energy reduction were revealed. The present work found that MM exhibited durable superoleophobic behaviors since it combined the merits of various bionic structures and abated their defects. The smallest VB and WRE arose simultaneously in ST turning when MMH had an inclination angle of 120°. In LT turning, MML with a side length of 250 μm caused the smallest VB and WRE . Obvious positive correlation was found for VB and WRE . Tool consumption and energy consumption were efficiently reduced by MM due to its durable superoleophobic behaviors. The energy reduction rate ranged from 31 % to 46 % in ST turning. This rate was in the range of 22 %–40 % in LT turning. • Multi-bionic microstructures (MM) were proposed for cemented carbide surface. • Two types of MM (MML and MMH) were acquired based on green preparation method. • Morphology features and durable superoleophobic behaviors were revealed for MM. • MM combined the merits of various bionic structures and abated their defects. • MM caused high-efficiency reduction of tool consumption and energy consumption.
