Identifying Leisure Constraints and Strategies for Improvement in Adult Taekwondo Education

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to conduct an in-depth analysis of leisure constraints observed in adult Taekwondo education and to propose specific, practical strategies for improvement. The goal is to provide foundation for policies and educational inititatives that make Taekwondo an accessible sport for people of all ages, promoting it as a viable form of daily physical activity.
Method: A qualitative research design was adopted for this study. The participants included eight individuals: six Taekwondo masters with over ten years of experience operating dojangs in the Gyeongsang Province and two association officials with experience in Taekwondo instruction. The study utilized theoretical purposive sampling to gather a diverse array of experiences and perspectives regarding adult Taekwondo education. Data collection involved focus group interviews that combined both semi-structured and unstructured formats, with each session lasting 60 to 90 minutes. After the initial round of interviews, open, axial, and selective coding were applied to identify major themes and subcategories. A second round of interviews was conducted to refine and deepen the analysis. To ensure reliability and validity, triangulation, member checking, and peer debriefing were incorporated into the study.
Results: The analysis revealed that leisure constraints in adult Taekwondo education arise from a complex interaction of perceptual, cognitive, and structural factors. Perceptually, there is a prevalent view of Taekwondo as a youth-centered activity, alongside psychological and physical burdens experienced by adults. Cognitively, issues such as a lack of interaction among practitioners, discomfort with mixed-age classes, and inadequate communication with instructors were noted. Structurally, the absence of programs tailored to adults, as well as insufficient instructor competency and administrative support, were identified as significant constraints. Suggested improvements include raising awareness, developing customized programs, and enhancing facilities and operational environments.
Conclusion: A comprehensive approach that addresses perception, program development, and the structural environment is crucial for revitalizing adult Taekwondo education. The improvement strategies proposed in this study are practical and, with the support of policy initiatives and community partnerships, can help establish adult Taekwondo as a sustainable leisure activity that promotes health management, stress relief, and social interaction.
