Abstract The transition from colorectal surgery fellowship to independent practice is both exciting and challenging, compounded by limited structured guidance on job selection and negotiation. This article provides an overview of major practice models, highlighting their respective advantages, drawbacks, and implications for early-career surgeons. Key considerations in job selection include practice type, location, and compensation, with emphasis on aligning positions with personal and professional priorities. This article provides an overview of components of compensation packages such as base salary, productivity metrics, bonuses, loan repayment, malpractice coverage, insurance, retirement plans, and CME support. Practical guidance is provided for navigating the job search process, preparing for interviews, and negotiating contracts, with attention to red flags and strategies for achieving clarity and fairness. By synthesizing available data and offering structured recommendations, this article aims to equip early-career colorectal surgeons with tools to make informed decisions and successfully launch their careers.
