Homogenisation of Wind Data for the Period 1997–2023 in Hungary and Analysis of Different Methods Used for Deriving Daily Wind Data

ABSTRACT Long‐term wind speed data are essential for climatological studies but are often disrupted by changes in measurement sites and methods. In Hungary, wind observations taken three times daily were replaced by automatically recorded 10‐min measurements in 1997, thus causing significant inhomogeneities. This research investigates 40 meteorological stations by homogenising automatic measurements (1997–2023) and simulating three‐times‐daily observations from the same period. Using MASH software for homogenisation, and the MISH meteorological interpolation software we quantified differences between the two datasets in both time and space. These findings offer an important foundation for integrating pre‐1997 data into modern wind speed databases, ensuring the continuity and reliability of long‐term climatological analyses. This study represents the first comprehensive homogenisation and comparison of wind speed measurements from two different methods in Hungary. As no prior research has systematically addressed this issue, our findings provide a crucial foundation for integrating pre‐1997 wind observations into modern climatological databases.
