Drivers for stakeholders' alignment: James Sinegal's humility, integrity and practicality
Purpose This study examines stakeholder alignment through the case of Costco CEO James Sinegal, illustrating how his leadership style, personal attributes and behaviors effectively reconciled and balanced the often-conflicting expectations and interests of diverse organizational stakeholders. Design/methodology/approach This qualitative psychobiographical case study draws on an extensive review of relevant literature, incorporating seminal and contemporary academic works, practitioner journals and reputable online sources. Findings Sinegal set realistic expectations for stakeholders, addressed concerns proactively, managed conflicts effectively and established trust as a key factor in stakeholder alignment. It is proposed that Sinegal's leadership styles, attitudes and behaviors were influenced by his family background, religious values, mentor and business partner. Research limitations/implications The proposed business model's applicability to sectors like finance, healthcare, entertainment or knowledge industries is uncertain. Current insights stem from one leader and organization, limiting generalizability. Practical implications This study advises executives on how reconciling stakeholder conflicting expectations can be accomplished. Social implications The study demonstrates how a combination of social features of capitalism and socialism have the potential to yield long-term extraordinary business results. Originality/value This case study demonstrates and explains how a company's CEO can accomplish the elusive objective of aligning conflicting expectations by various stakeholders.
