Vareniklin ve Nikotin Bandı Kullanan Sigara İçicilerinde Nikotin Bağımlılık Skoru, Karbon monoksit Düzeyi ve Sigara Bırakma Durumu Arasındaki İlişkinin Değerlendirilmesi

Introduction: Although it is known that smoking causes significant health problems, many people do not fully understand the harmful effects of tobacco. Smoking Cessation Polyclinics offer various supports to those who want to get rid of addiction and create personalised treatment plans. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationships between nicotine dependence score, carbon monoxide level and smoking cessation status in individuals who applied to the smoking cessation outpatient clinic and were deemed appropriate to use varenicline and nicotine patch.Material and Methods: In the study in which the data of the clients who applied to the Seyhan District Health Directorate Pınar Healthy Life Centre Smoking Cessation Outpatient Clinic in 2021 were retrospectively reviewed, data on the socio-demographic characteristics of the clients, the amount of cigarettes smoked, the number of years of smoking, chronic disease status information, Fagerström nicotine dependence test scores and carbon monoxide measurements and smoking cessation status were collected by file scanning. 310 individuals who used varenicline and nicotine patch as treatment were included in the study. The study data were analysed with SPSS 22.0 package programme. Results: Of the 310 clients who participated in the study, 169 (%54.5) were male and 141(%45.5) were female, with a mean age of was 40.8±11.4 years. While 47.4% (n=65) of the clients who were given varenicline treatment in the smoking cessation outpatient clinic quit smoking, 40.5% (n=70) of the clients who were given nicotine patches quit smoking. According to the results of the Fagerström Nicotine Dependence Test (FNBT), 5.5% were very low, 11.6% low, 10.6% moderate, 27.1% high and 45.2% very high dependent. The carbon monoxide level of those who quit smoking was lower (11.9 ppm), while the carbon monoxide level of those who did not quit smoking was higher (13.6 ppm). It was found that there was a positive and statistically significant correlation between the CO measurement value and the FNBT score (p<0.001); in other words, as the CO level increased, so did the level of dependence. Conclusion: Factors such as addiction score and carbon monoxide level had an effect on the success of smoking cessation. However, no significant relationship was found between variables such as treatment regime, age, body mass index, pack/year and smoking cessation status. It is recommended to develop strategies for monitoring CO level and increasing individual motivation in smoking cessation outpatient clinics, and to develop more effective prevention and intervention methods by considering the effects of environmental risk factors on addiction.
