Direct Lithium Harvesting via Superionic Conductor Membranes

Abstract Lithium superionic conductors (LSICs), a class of solid‐state electrolytes known for their exceptional ionic conductivity, have been pivotal in advancing all‐solid‐state batteries. Beyond their established role in energy storage, recent research highlights their emerging potential as highly selective membrane materials for direct lithium extraction (DLE). This review critically examines the opportunities and challenges associated with LSIC‐based membranes for DLE, focusing on their structural characteristics and ion transport mechanisms. How these membranes address the limitations of conventional membranes in lithium extraction and highlight recent implementation of LSICs in DLE are discussed. The insights presented could drive the development of LSICs as lithium‐selective membranes for efficient lithium recovery and broader ion separation technologies.
