Unwanted Duty: Challenges in the Appointment of Diplomatic Representatives in the Early-17th Century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth1

This article explores the persistent reluctance of officials in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth to undertake diplomatic duties in the early 17th century, with particular emphasis on negotiations involving Sweden and Muscovy. The analysis focuses on Sejm-appointed commissions rather than traditional diplomatic missions, both because such forms of engagement were especially common at the time and because the available sources lend themselves to a more detailed examination of the issue. Drawing on official and personal correspondence, Sejm resolutions, and diplomatic records, the study investigates the procedures for appointing commissioners and the deeper motives behind their refusal to accept such assignments. The findings reveal that negotiations were frequently hindered by commissioners’ refusalsto serve or by delayed arrivals, circumstances that often required repeated changes to the composition of commissions. Although reluctance was commonly explained in terms of ill health, advanced age, or personal obligations, these justifications often masked more pressing concerns: fear of mission failure and the resulting reputational damage, the burden of significant personal expenses, and uncertainty about meaningful rewards. Consequently, diplomatic service in the Commonwealth was regarded less as a mark of prestige than as a burdensome duty–one generally avoided unless dictated by geopolitical necessity or enforced through strong royal pressure.
