Chemistry as a catalyst for sustainable change
Chemistry permeates every aspect of modern life, from fertilizers and fuels to pharmaceuticals and technology. But this comes at a cost. Around 8% of deaths worldwide can be attributed to chemical exposure, and the global chemical industry is responsible for approximately 6% of greenhouse gas emissions. These impacts are expected to worsen as demand for chemical products is projected to double by 2050. These figures underscore a sobering truth: without transforming chemistry itself, the resulting impacts on the environment, ecosystems, and human well-being will continue to escalate.
