Evaluation of the Marginal Microleakage of Two Different Pit and Fissure Sealants: A Comparative Study
Aim:The aim of the current investigation was to assess the marginal microleakage of two distinct pit and fissure sealants. Materials and methods:In the present study, 40 healthy mandibular premolar teeth that had been extracted for orthodontic purposes were included.Following a random selection process, the samples were split into two groups of 20 each: Group I: Application of Clinpro sealant, group II: Application of UltraSeal XT hydro sealant.Samples were thermocyclized (250 cycles between 5C and 55C) with a 30-second immersion period in each bath and a 10-second transfer period. The samples were submerged in 1% methylene blue for 24 hours. To evaluate the microleakage, all samples were sectioned and examined using a stereomicroscope at a magnification of 10.Scoring criteria were used to assess the extent of microleakage. All data collected and statistically analyzed. Results: The least microleakage was found in the UltraSeal XT hydro sealant group, with a mean of 1.12 0.10, followed by the Clinpro sealant group, with a mean of 2.06 0.06.There was a statistically significant difference found between the groups (p < 0.001).In the Clinpro sealant group, score 1 was more, that is, 9 (45%), followed by score 2, that is, 8 (40%), and score 0 was 3 (15%).In the UltraSeal XT hydro sealant group, score 1 was more, that is, 14 (70%), followed by score 0 was 6 (30%). Conclusion:The present study concluded that the UltraSeal XT hydro sealant group showed significantly reduced microleakage compared to the Clinpro sealant group.Clinical significance: Pit and fissures in the permanent teeth are regarded to be extremely susceptible to cariogenic microbe adherence, which leads to the development of caries. The main problem associated with sealant failure is microleakage.Consequently, sealants can only be regarded as a successful dental caries prevention treatment if they adhere firmly to the tooth and conceal the pits and fissures from the oral microbial environment.
