The Chilling Effect of a “Parents’ Rights” Legal Challenge and Community Resistance Aimed at Protecting the Rights of Trans People in K–12 Schools
This article examines how educational leaders and community members in a politically contested state responded to a “parents’ rights” legal challenge attempting to restrict trans-affirming policies. While the lawsuit’s visibility contributed to a “chilling” of LGBTQ+-inclusivity programs and staff support, demand from educators, students, and parents to maintain inclusive practices demonstrated the community’s resistance to “parents’ rights” restrictions. This case highlights the tensions involved in advancing gender-inclusive education within the contentious socio-political landscape, and has implications for school leaders invested in safe, gender-affirming, and supportive learning environments for all youth.
