Efficient alcohol oxidation reaction by Co-Cu bimetallic phosphides

The electrocatalytic oxidation of alcohols present a promising avenue for advancing sustainable energy conversion technologies, offering a potential alternative to the sluggish and energy-intensive oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we introduce a novel class of Co x Cu y P bimetallic phosphides that combine high methanol oxidation (MOR) activity with near-complete selectivity toward formate production, using earth-abundant metals. The Co x Cu y P catalysts were synthesized through a controlled colloidal synthetic pathway, allowing for tuneable Co/Cu ratios. Electrochemical analysis revealed that Co 50 Cu 50 P exhibited outstanding catalytic performance for MOR compared to reference catalysts, particularly in terms of current density (164 mA/cm 2 at 1.7 V vs. RHE). Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) product analysis demonstrated high selectivity toward formate production, with Faradaic efficiencies approaching 100 %. Moreover, the catalytic activity of these materials was evaluated for the oxidation of other alcohols, indicating potential versatility. Overall, the Co x Cu y P catalysts exhibit promising electrocatalytic activity and durability for alcohol oxidation. Given that methanol partial oxidation also yields formate, a compound with significant economic value, this new class of catalysts, with a high proportion of environmentally friendly Cu, offers competitive activity compared to noble metals, underscoring their potential in sustainable energy conversion applications. • Bimetallic Co–Cu phosphides enable highly selective methanol oxidation catalysis. • Noble-metal-free design avoids CO poisoning and enhances product selectivity. • Catalysts yield formate, a valuable liquid chemical with commercial relevance. • Emissions-free process simplifies separation and eliminates pollution. • Copper-rich systems offer a green, sustainable platform for selective catalysis.
