Enhancing Immunology Education & Strengthening Cognitive Thinking Through Artificial Intelligence: Personalizing Learning Experiences in Graduate Education 9362
Abstract Description Graduate programs, especially at historically black colleges and universities, often face the challenge of addressing the diverse educational backgrounds and learning styles of their students. This diversity can significantly affect students’ grasp of intricate immunology concepts, such as antigen presentation or lymphocyte development. Artificial intelligence, exemplified by tools like ChatGPT, presents a compelling solution to these challenges by providing engaging educational experiences and strengthening critical thinking. This work explores the integration of ChatGPT in teaching immunology to graduate students, focusing on customization of the teaching and learning experience of immunology concepts. Through the generation of analogies that simplify these concepts, the creation of tailored experimental designs that highlight student research, and the design of cognitive activities that promote critical thinking rather than rote memorization, student exam scores increased by an average of 10 points. This is equivalent to an entire letter grade and can determine if a student passes or fails an exam. Moreover, ChatGPT enhances student engagement by facilitating interactive discussions, which is crucial for building critical thinking. The use of AI like ChatGPT in immunology education transforms the learning environment by encouraging active learning and deep understanding, thereby enhancing both foundational knowledge and cognitive thinking.
