Revolutionizing bacterial vaginosis treatment through an immunomodulatory natural approach in Baku, Azerbaijan 2255
Abstract Description Bacterial vaginosis (BV) disrupts the vaginal microbiome and significantly impacts women’s well-being. Natural compounds with potential immunomodulatory effects could provide an alternative approach to antibiotics. Our multicenter, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial involved women previously diagnosed with BV who had experienced at least one recurrence in the past two years. Participants were randomized into two groups: the intervention group (n = 40) received a novel treatment composed of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1% lactic acid, and Rosmarinus officinalis L. essential oil. The control group (n = 40) received the standard Metronidazole Vaginal Gel (MVG) 0.75% combined with all three of the above ingredients over seven days. Preliminary data indicate a significant difference in recurrence rates between the two groups, potentially linked to the immunomodulatory effects of the intervention. No recurrences of BV were observed in the intervention group during the first three months, compared to a 5% recurrence rate in the control group. Between months three and six, 7.5% of the intervention group and 40% of the control group experienced recurrence. By nine months, 17.5% of the intervention group and nearly 50% of the control group had recurrences. Observed trends suggest that the intervention may enhance local immune defense, reduce inflammation, and support microbial stability. Topic Categories Mucosal and Regional Immunology (MUC)
