Innovative approaches in teaching developmental immunology: integrating inclusive practices, group work, and AI tools 2834

Abstract Description In Fall 2024, I launched “Developmental Immunology” at UC Merced, a course engaging undergraduates in exploring immune system development with a focus on stem cells. The course integrates inclusive teaching practices, collaborative group activities, and AI-driven tools to enhance learning and engagement. Diverse pedagogical strategies, such as group discussions, case studies, and reflective exercises, create a supportive environment where every student contributes meaningfully. AI tools assist in organizing content, providing customized feedback, and helping students synthesize complex concepts. Weekly group activities encourage critical analysis and presentation of key topics, fostering active learning and deeper understanding of developmental immunology. Preliminary outcomes, based on homework, group presentations, and reflective exercises, indicate significant improvements in students’ ability to synthesize primary literature and apply knowledge to case studies on immune system development and stem cell-based therapies. Reflective journals reveal increased awareness of ethical considerations and emerging technologies in immunology. This summary shares my experiences in course design, explores the impact on student learning, and contributes to the dialogue on innovative, inclusive pedagogy in immunology education.
