Factors Influencing Antibody Levels Against Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis and Bovine Viral Diarrhea Through Passive Immunization in Jersey Calves 4829

Abstract Description Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) and Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) represent significant diseases impacting calves worldwide. Newborn and young calves rely primarily on passive immunity transferred from their mothers as their main defense mechanism against infectious diseases. Dams are routinely vaccinated on a scheduled basis with comprehensive vaccines against IBR and BVD to protect calves from these infections. In Korea, the demand for Jersey cattle is increasing due to their heat stress adaptability and the superior quality of their milk, characterized by high fat and protein content. This study investigates the IBR and BVD antibody levels conferred by passive immunity and the factors associated with them in Jersey calves. Jersey calves at one day of age exhibited higher levels of antibodies against IBR and BVD compared to their dams on the day of calving. Antibody levels in Jersey calves declined progressively until 12 weeks of age, with influencing factors varying between IBR and BVD despite comprehensive maternal vaccination. IBR antibody levels in calves at 12 weeks were significantly influenced by breed, parity, and dam antibody levels, whereas BVD antibody levels were primarily affected by the dam’s BVD antibody levels. This study provides insights into antibody dynamics against IBR and BVD, contributing to improved vaccination strategies for Jersey calves.
