Cinemimmunology: This method highlights improvements in student comprehension and long-term retention of immunology concepts, especially among those with learning difficulties 4749

Abstract Description We present cinemimmunology as an innovative educational strategy that employs films to teach immunology concepts. This research describes how cinematic narratives can make complex scientific ideas more relatable and understandable for students, particularly in the context of medical education. The term “cinemimmunology” is introduced to describe the integration of cinema into immunology education, aiming to enhance student engagement and learning. Popular films, such as The Incredibles and The Boss Baby, were used to create relatable analogies for immune system components. For example, T cells are likened to strong fathers, B cells to adaptable mothers, antibodies to defensive teenagers, and cytokines to babies representing potential. The study conducted at the College of Health Sciences and Pharmacy at Chicago State University details the structure of workshops where students watch selected films and participate in discussions that link film characters and plots to immunological concepts, fostering more profound understanding. We report on the positive outcomes of using this method, highlighting improvements in student comprehension and long-term retention of immunology concepts, especially among those with learning difficulties. Our work emphasizes the potential of cinemimmunology as a powerful tool for teaching immunology, proposing that integrating films into educational practices can significantly improve student engagement and comprehension of complex subjects.
