Evaluation on Fucoidan mix AG as an anti-inflammatory agent enhancing healing after dental implant placement 3476
Abstract Description Fucoidan is a sort of sulfated polysaccharide that constitutes the viscous component of brown seaweeds. In previous studies, we have demonstrated that fucoidan enhances cellular immune response against cancer and infectious agents, but it also alleviates inflammatory reactions associated with excessive activation of innate immune cells that occur in some infectious diseases. Fucoidan is also known to affect the growth of intestinal bacteria, and our recent investigation on the growth of caries and periodontal disease bacteria has shown that fucoidan significantly inhibited the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effect of Fucoidan mix AG, a proprietary mixture of two types fucoidan vary in their origin (Cladosiphon okamuranus and Undaria pinnatifida) and an agaricus mycelium extract, on oral inflammation using the human gingival squamous cell line Ca9-22. The results indicated that Fucoidan mix AG suppressed the gene expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and intracellular signaling molecules in Ca9-22 cells as well as macrophages and dendritic cells which observed in our previous studies. These results suggested that Fucoidan mix AG might inhibits the induction of gingival inflammation that often occurs in dental implant placement (so-called peri-implantitis), and we are currently examining the potential to promote healing after implant operations on the terminal dentition.
