Assessment of an allergic patient education guide by general practitioners

• A patient education session guide used by general practitioners for allergic patients is an interesting tool. • Its feasibility is hampered by the lack of time during the consultation and the availability of trainer AAIs. • Involving other healthcare professionals could be a solution, provided their prior training. • This tool could also provide a partial response to the training needs of GPs and other healthcare professionals. Immediate intramuscular administration of adrenaline with auto-injector devices (AAI) is the first line treatment of anaphylaxis and requires regular patient education, especially by general practitioners (GPs). We evaluated the value of a therapeutic patient education (TPE) guide as a tool designed for GPs. We created a TPE guide for instruction and training on when and how to use AAIs. We assessed the acceptability and feasibility of this tool during consultations by a questionnaire survey. A total of 85 responses were included. Acceptability was demonstrated but not feasibility, due to the unavailability of trainer AAI and the lack of time to use the guide during medical consultations. This study demonstrates the acceptability of the TPE guide for GPs but not its feasibility. The involvement of other health professionals and the availability of trainers AAI could improve this point.
