Cannabis use and cardiometabolic risk in schizophrenia

In schizophrenia, cannabis use was associated with lower rates of both metabolic syndrome and central obesity. While these findings support emerging evidence of metabolic differences in cannabis users, the cross-sectional design precludes conclusions regarding causality. Longitudinal studies are needed to clarify long-term metabolic effects and guide targeted interventions.

Abstract

In schizophrenia, cannabis use was associated with lower rates of both metabolic syndrome and central obesity. While these findings support emerging evidence of metabolic differences in cannabis users, the cross-sectional design precludes conclusions regarding causality. Longitudinal studies are needed to clarify long-term metabolic effects and guide targeted interventions.
