Building an intelligent food assurance system based on DevOps: A review

• Introduces DevOps as a system development approach in the food sector. • Explores the potential applications of DevOps in food supply chains. • Proposes a DevOps-driven framework for building intelligent food systems. Driven by digital transformation, digital technologies are being progressively applied within food systems to ensure the integrity, authenticity, and resilience of food supply chains. Enabling these systems and technologies to adapt more profoundly to supply chain requirements and integrate effectively into industrial applications remains a challenge. The DevOps methodology, traditionally associated with computer science, is now being explored in non-traditional areas, such as food systems, as its principles of agility, responsiveness, and continuous improvement can significantly enhance the performance of future intelligent food systems. This study reviews literature, case evidence, and existing technical models to examine how DevOps practices might be applied from system planning through to daily operations. The review reveals that the complete application of DevOps in this field is rare; however, its principles can provide practical direction for the development of intelligent food assurance systems (IFAS). The review identifies potential technological opportunities within DevOps and proposes a conceptual framework for applying them to the food supply chain. Meanwhile, achieving a balance between collaborative efficiency and system security within the DevOps-based IFAS framework will become a key consideration for future development.
