Echoes of Silenced Voices: Sophocles’ Electra 379–82

Abstract: Sophocles’ Electra 379–82 contain allusions to passages in Antigone , the Oresteia , and the Odyssey involving the tyrannical suppression of politically inconvenient voices. The reverberations of these allusions throughout Electra add depth and scope to the representation of the conflict among Electra, Aegisthus, and Clytemnestra, calling particular attention to the political valence of Electra’s lamentation and the tyrants’ plan to imprison and silence her.
