Writing Ovid’s Myth of Exile in Epistula ex Ponto 3.1

Abstract: This paper argues that Ovid’s Epistula ex Ponto 3.1 encourages readers to join the poet in constructing his myth of exile. The cognitive labor involved increases a reader’s investment in the myth they assemble, implicating them in its outcome and in Ovid’s fate—a victorious homecoming or a tragic end.
