(P4) socio-cultural and ethical dilemmas in psychosexual therapy: investigating parental perspectives on sexual education and mental health

Abstract Background Psychosexual therapists operating within Arabic culture frequently encounter significant socio-cultural and ethical dilemmas when addressing sexual education and dysfunctions in children and adolescents. These challenges are compounded by the developmental stages of youth, which influence parental beliefs and societal norms. The stigma surrounding sexual health can complicate the therapeutic process, impacting treatment efficacy and outcomes. This study aims to explore the cultural and ethical challenges faced by psychosexual therapists and psychiatrists in the Arab region when treating sexual difficulties and dysfunctions in children and adolescents. It seeks to understand the fears and concerns that complicate sexual education and therapy for this population. Methods A qualitative analysis was conducted through public questionnaires distributed to psychosexual therapists practicing in Arabic-speaking countries. Participants provided insights into the cultural and ethical dilemmas they encounter while addressing sexual difficulties in youth. Thematic analysis was employed to identify recurring challenges and the influence of cultural factors on therapeutic practices. Results Findings revealed that parents often grapple with dilemmas related to confidentiality, cultural stigma, and the balancing of traditional values with modern therapeutic approaches. Cultural expectations surrounding gender roles and sexual behavior frequently hinder open discussions about sexual issues, resulting in reluctance to seek help and adhere to treatment. Therapists emphasized that navigating these cultural sensitivities is crucial for establishing trust and fostering effective therapeutic relationships. Conclusion The socio-cultural and ethical dilemmas faced by psychosexual therapists when addressing sexual difficulties and dysfunctions in Arabic culture necessitate a nuanced understanding of cultural dynamics. Ongoing education and training focused on cultural competence are essential for empowering therapists to address these challenges effectively, ultimately enhancing treatment adherence and outcomes for children, adolescents, and their families.
