(P16) cultural and ethical dilemmas in psychosexual therapy: addressing sexual difficulties and dysfunctions within Arabic culture

Abstract Background Psychosexual therapists working within Arabic culture often encounter significant cultural and ethical dilemmas when addressing sexual difficulties and dysfunctions in both individuals and couples. Cultural norms, societal expectations, and the stigma surrounding sexual health can complicate the therapeutic process and influence treatment outcomes. This study aims to explore the cultural and ethical challenges faced by psychosexual therapists in the Arab region when treating sexual difficulties and dysfunctions in individuals and couples, emphasizing how these dilemmas impact therapy effectiveness. Methods A qualitative analysis was conducted through interviews with psychosexual therapists practicing in Arabic-speaking countries. Participants shared their experiences regarding the cultural and ethical dilemmas encountered while addressing sexual difficulties and dysfunctions. Thematic analysis was employed to identify recurring challenges and the influence of cultural factors on therapeutic practices. Results Findings revealed that therapists frequently grapple with dilemmas related to confidentiality, cultural stigma, and the balancing of traditional values with modern therapeutic approaches. Cultural expectations around gender roles and sexual behavior often hinder open discussions about sexual issues, leading to reluctance in seeking help and adherence to treatment. Therapists noted that navigating these cultural sensitivities is essential for establishing trust and promoting effective therapeutic relationships. Conclusion The cultural and ethical dilemmas faced by psychosexual therapists when dealing with sexual difficulties and dysfunctions within Arabic culture necessitate a nuanced understanding of cultural dynamics. Ongoing education and training focused on cultural competence can empower therapists to address these challenges effectively, ultimately enhancing treatment adherence and outcomes for individuals and couples.
