(P15) the interplay between infertility and sexual dysfunction among couples in Arabic culture

Abstract Background Infertility is a significant concern for many couples in Arabic culture, often leading to emotional distress and sexual dysfunction. The societal pressure to conceive, coupled with the stigma surrounding infertility, can adversely affect couples’ sexual health and relationships. This study aims to examine the relationship between infertility and sexual dysfunction in couples within Arabic culture, exploring how cultural perceptions influence both issues and affect therapeutic interventions. Methods A qualitative study was conducted involving interviews with couples experiencing infertility and psychosexual therapists working in the Arab region. Thematic analysis was utilized to identify patterns and correlations between infertility and sexual dysfunction, focusing on cultural influences and emotional responses. Results Findings indicate a strong correlation between infertility and sexual dysfunction among couples. Emotional factors such as anxiety, depression, and feelings of inadequacy were prevalent, often exacerbated by societal expectations and cultural norms. Therapists reported that these dynamics complicate the therapeutic process, making it essential to address both infertility and sexual health in treatment. Conclusion The interplay between infertility and sexual dysfunction presents unique challenges in the context of Arabic culture. A comprehensive approach that considers the cultural, emotional, and relational aspects of both issues is vital for effective treatment. Enhanced awareness and culturally sensitive therapeutic practices can improve outcomes for couples facing these intertwined challenges.
