(P14) safety and efficacy of platelet-rich plasma injection for treatment of erectile dysfunction. A randomized prospective study
Abstract Background Various approaches have been used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). Platelet-derived therapies are a growing trend across multiple medical and surgical specialties via their role in tissue repair and vascular remodeling. The aim of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection treatment in erectile dysfunction patients (ED). Methods A total of 52 subjects were recruited from the department of Urology, Faculty of Medicine, Beni-Suef University. Subjects were then randomized into two groups: PRP group (n = 26), and the placebo group (n = 26). All participants underwent three sessions of PRP or placebo injections. International index of erectile function (IIEF-5) and safety related questions will be collected at the time of clinical follow-up at 1,3,6 months. Results There was no statistically significant difference between groups after 1,3 and 6 months of treatment. After one month, the IIEF of PRP group was 16.12 ± 1.25 and 15.99 ± 1.21 for the placebo group. After 3 months, the IIEF of PRP group was 16.44 ± 1.17 and 16.31 ± 1.06 for the placebo group. After 6 months, the IIEF for the PRP group was 16.35 ± 1.45 and 16.23 ± 1.19 for the placebo group. No transient hemorrhagic adverse events (hematuria, local petechial bleeding or ecchymosis) or other side effects were reported during the injection and follow-up period in both groups. Conclusion The results of this trial suggest that treatment of ED with 3 injections of intracavernosal PRP separated by 2 weeks is safe, but not more effective than placebo.
