(P8) intra-cavernous injection of platelet rich plasma for treatment of erectile dysfunction; 2 years follow up

Abstract Background The use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the treatment of ED is related to the fact that PRP contains many growth factors. PRP has been used to treat erectile dysfunction. However, to our knowledge, this is the first study to conduct a 2-year follow-up of the enrolled patients. The current study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections in mild to moderate erectile dysfunction with 2 2-year follow-up. Methods 50 patients with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction (according to IIEF-EF score) received 3 injections of autologous PRP (3 ml each corpus) with 2 weeks in between. Patients were followed up at 1, 3, 6 months, and every 6 months for 2 years. After 6 months (30%) 15 patients did not complete the study as they did not attain the minimal clinically important difference (MCID), and the remaining patients (35) were divided into Group 1 (18 patients) received 2 injections 2 weeks apart every 6 months, and Group 2 (17 patients) did not receive injections after the initial ones. Results There was a significant improvement at 1 and 3 months follow-up that slightly dropped at the 6 months follow-up (p < 0.001). The improvement was evident in IIEFEF, SEP Q3, and the duplex parameters. Patients’ overall and intercourse satisfaction levels were also improved demonstrated by the higher IIEF score Q6, 7, 8, and IIEF score Q13, 14, respectively, with the maximum improvement reported at the 3-month follow-up. At 6-month post-treatment follow-up (70%), 35 patients had an improved IIEF-EF as they attained minimal clinically important difference (MCID), and (30%) 15 patients did not attain a MCID and did not complete the study. After 6 months, Group 1 showed continuous improvement in all parameters up to 2 years, but Group 2 showed a gradual decline in all parameters, still better than baseline. No reports of plaque formation, subcutaneous bruising, or any other major side effects among patients. Conclusion (PRP) is a safe and promising method for improving of mild to moderate cases of Erectile dysfunction.
