(S12) dancing with shame: the unseen cycle of sexual dysfunction
Abstract Background Shame is a powerful emotion that significantly impacts individuals’ sexual experiences. When left unaddressed, shame can lead to sexual dysfunction, creating barriers to healthy sexual expression. Despite its profound effect on mental and physical well-being, the relationship between shame and sexual dysfunction is often underexplored in therapeutic settings. This presentation aims to elucidate how shame directly contributes to sexual dysfunction and how these negative emotions complicate sexual experiences, preventing individuals from achieving a fulfilling and healthy sexual life. Methods A qualitative research was conducted, including a literature review and in-depth interviews with 25 individuals experiencing sexual dysfunction related to shame. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns of how shame affects sexual experiences. Results The findings revealed that shame perpetuates and intensifies sexual dysfunction. Key shame-related factors, such as feelings of inadequacy, fear of judgment, and anxiety over body image, were identified as core contributors to persistent sexual difficulties. Participants reported that these emotions hindered their ability to seek help or treatment. Conclusion The findings revealed that shame perpetuates and intensifies sexual dysfunction.
