Role of Pt in improving the oxidation and spallation resistance of Al0.7CrFeCoNi high-entropy alloy coatings at 1200 °C

A Pt + Al0.7CrFeCoNi high-entropy alloy (Pt + HEA) coating is designed to address the degradation of conventional coatings at 1200 °C. It allows a uniform distribution of Pt inside the coating under 1200 °C oxidation, demonstrating superior oxidation resistance and service stability through synergistic mechanisms: (1) suppresses oxide spallation by chemical oxide stabilization and mechanical stress alleviation, (2) retards elemental interdiffusion and depletion by Pt-induced lattice distortion and (3) decreases the thermodynamic driving force for topologically close-packed (TCP) phase precipitation. These effects, collectively stabilizing adherent α-Al2O3 scales while inhibiting TCP formation, effectively achieve a coating’s service life extension, establishing a framework for designing coatings with enhanced ultrahigh-temperature performance.
