Stress Wave Propagation and Energy Absorption of Ti–6Al–4V Lattice Structure Under Impact
In this work, impact experiments with different impact velocities were performed using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) to study the stress wave propagation and energy absorption characteristics of lattice structures of simple cubic (SC), body-centered cubic (BCC) and face-centered cubic (FCC) Ti–6Al–4V under dynamic compression. A high-speed camera was used to record the dynamic responses of the lattice structure specimens. The results indicate that the structure crucially influences the attenuation and energy absorption of stress waves. The influencing factors in descending order are the relative density, structure type and strain rate. Numerical modeling and simulations were then performed to predict and investigate the dynamic response of the structure, the behavior of the stress wave and their interactions via the finite element method. The numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental data. A systematic analysis and discussion were then performed based on the numerical predictions and experimental results. The results demonstrate that the struts within the lattice structure can effectively disperse the stress wave from the impact direction to other directions, thereby attenuating the one-dimensional incident stress wave.
