Anticandidal effects of bisdemethoxycurcumin & melatonin with dual light emitting diode in photodynamic therapy
This study aimed to evaluate the anticandidal effects of photodynamic therapy using bisdemethoxycurcumin and melatonin with a dual-wavelength light-emitting diode, along with the associated intracellular oxidative stress production." Photodynamic therapy sessions using 20, 40 and 60 μM bisdemethoxycurcumin followed by 20, 100 and 200 μM melatonin were performed in mature Candida albicans (ATCC10231) biofilm samples to evaluate median log10CFU reduction and intracellular oxidative stress. The statistical analyses were tested using Kruskal-Wallis with post hoc test (α=0.05). There was a tendency toward increased candidal inhibition when combining photodynamic therapy (60 μM bisdemethoxycurcumin followed by 100 μM melatonin). This combination exhibited a significant increase in anticandidal effect at 1 hour (1.02log10CFU/ml reduction, p < 0.05). Interestingly, intracellular oxidative stress was significantly decreased in samples treated with higher concentrations of melatonin (p < 0.05). Low levels of melatonin may synergistically enhance the anticandidal effects of bisdemethoxycurcumin-mediated photodynamic therapy.
