Hemoporfin-PDT combined with 1064nm Q-switched laser for the treatment of phakomatosis pigmentovascularis: a case report

Phakomatosis pigmentovascularis (PPV) is a rare congenital syndrome that combines capillary malformation (port-wine stains) with pigmentary nevi. Hemoporfin-PDT and 1064nm Q-switched lasers are used to treat vascular disease and various pigmented disorders respectively. There have been no reports of the combined use of 1064nm Q-switched lasers and Hemoporfin-PDT in patients with PPV. A 10-month-old girl presented with erythema on the face and neck associated with greyish-blue macules within the forehead and hairline, was diagnosed with PPV type IIa, with PWS and nevus of Ota. We treated the nevus of Ota with 1064nm Q-switched laser and the PWS with Hemoporfin-PDT. There was a remarkable improvement in the patient's nevus of Ota within the forehead region and PWS in the bilateral cheeks and forehead. The 1064nm Q-switched laser combined with Hemoporfin-PDT for PPV demonstrates significant efficacy.
