Hypericin in Photodynamic Therapy - immunomodulatory effect on Breast Cancer Cells

Confirmation of the cytotoxic and immunomodulatory effectiveness of photodynamic therapy (PDT) tested at the level of breast cancer cells (BC) in vitro is necessary to assess the possible benefits of using this treatment in clinical trials. The study analyzed icytotoxic and mmunomodulatory effect of HY PDT due to assesment of IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and TNF-α release. The cytotoxic effect of HY-PDT depended on the dose HY-PDT. The concentration of IL-6 and IL-8 after the use of sublethal doses of HY-PDT significantly decreased in the MCF-7 line. The concentration of IL-8 after the use of HY-PDT significantly decreased in the MCF-7 and hTERT lines. The concentration of TNF-α significantly increased in the MCF-7 and hTERT lines. PDT results confirmed the cytotoxic and immunomodulatory effect of HY PDT on both BC cell lines.
