Facial Port Wine Stain Distribution and Clinical Manifestations of Sturge-Weber Syndrome, Hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether Photodynamic Therapy Effectiveness: A Retrospective Study
Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a rare, congenital disease which frequently characterized by facial port wine stain (PWS) and capillary-venous malformation of the leptomeninges and eye. The aim of this article is to present the clinical manifestations and facial lesions distribution of this syndrome and to assess the efficacy and safety of HMME PDT for treating facial PWS in SWS patients. Clinical data were collected from 52 cases with confirmed SWS, who were treated with two sessions of HMME mediated PDT. Fair to excellent clearance was achieved in 59.6%(n = 31) SWS patients after two sessions of HMME mediated PDT. The side effects after treatment mainly displayed with short-term pain, edema, pruritus, crust, hyperpigmentation. No severe adverse event occurred. Hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether photodynamic therapy is an effective and safe for management of facial port wine stains in the Sturge-Weber syndrome patients.
