The effectiveness of photodynamic therapy using Fotoran E6® (Chlorin E6) in patients with basal cell carcinoma of skin

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer, requiring treatments that balance efficacy and cosmetic outcomes. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) using Fotoran E6® (Chlorin E6) provides a minimally invasive alternative to traditional methods. This study evaluated 1, 782 BCC patients (tumors ≤2 cm, mostly on the face) treated with PDT. After intravenous Fotoran E6® (Chlorin E6) 1.0 mg/kg and a 2-hour exposure, tumors were irradiated with a 670 nm laser at 300–350 mW/cm². Patients were followed for five years. Complete tumor regression was observed in all patients at one-month post-treatment. Recurrence rates were 1% at one year and 8.5% over five years. PDT was well-tolerated and achieved excellent cosmetic results. PDT using Fotoran E6® (Chlorin E6) is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive treatment for BCC, offering low recurrence rates and excellent cosmetic outcomes, making it a reliable alternative to conventional treatments.
