HEALING IN PERIODONTICS: BRIDGING THE DREAM, MYSTERY, AND REALITY
Healing in periodontics integrates cellular biology, biomaterial science, and clinical artistry to restore the form and function of periodontal tissues. It is a multidimensional process that represents not only a biological response but also the convergence of human understanding, aspiration, and innovation. The concept of dream, mystery, and reality provides a philosophical and scientific lens to interpret the dynamics of periodontal regeneration. The dream symbolizes the quest for complete regeneration; the mystery reflects the yet-unresolved mechanisms that govern biological variability; and the reality encompasses the evidence-based outcomes of current therapies such as guided tissue regeneration (GTR), bone grafts, and bioactive molecules. This review summarizes the biological processes, clinical interventions, and regenerative technologies underpinning healing in periodontics. It also highlights the limitations, challenges, and future prospects in aligning scientific advancement with clinical predictability. Healing thus represents a continuum-from visionary ideals to measurable results-bridging art, science, and compassion in modern periodontal practice.
