Differences in match-running performances across racial groups in professional soccer players

The aim of the current study is to examine whether match-running performance differs across players of different ethnic origins in elite soccer. Physical and technical performance data from all matches in the Spanish LaLiga during the 2018–2019 season were analysed. A total of 4011 individual match observations (3319 white players and 692 black players) were analysed using a computerised tracking system (TRACAB, Chyronhego, New York, USA). The players were classified into five positional roles: central defenders (CD), full backs (FB), central midfielders (CM), external midfielders (EM), and forwards (F). Generalised linear models were used to analyse differences in players’ match performance based on their race, age, and playing position. The results revealed that (i) overall, white players covered more total distance and had a higher average speed compared to black players (p < 0.05); (ii) however, this difference varied by playing position. While there were no differences in match-running performance between white and black players for the CD and F positions, white FBs, EMs, and CMs exhibited better physical performance compared with their black counterparts; and (iii) younger players demonstrated better physical performance than older players did, with age-related declines in physical performance being more pronounced among FBs and CMs. Contrary to popular belief, the findings reveal a nuanced picture: while it is commonly assumed that black players possess superior athletic ability, the results of this study challenge this notion.
