EFFECT OF SALT BALANCE ALKALINE MOUTHWASH AND 0.2% CHLORHEXIDINE MOUTHWASHON SALIVARY PH IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder known to adversely affect oral health, often leading to alterations in salivary composition, reduced salivary flow, and increased susceptibility to periodontal disease. Maintaining salivary pH near neutrality is essential for preserving oral microbial balance and preventing disease progression. Aim: The present study aimed to evaluate and compare the effect of a saltbalanced alkaline (SBA) mouthwash and chlorhexidine mouthwash on salivary pH among diabetic patients. Materials and Methods:Atotal of 30 diabetic patients were randomly divided into two groups: Group I (SBA mouthwash) and Group II (0.12% chlorhexidine mouthwash). Baseline assessments included salivary pH, Plaque Index (PI), and Gingival Index (GI). Participants were instructed to use their respective mouthwashes twice daily for 14 days. Follow-up measurements were recorded to evaluate changes in salivary pH and oral hygiene parameters. Results: At baseline, both groups exhibited slightly acidic salivary pH, consistent with the oral environment commonly observed in diabetic patients. After 14 days, Group I demonstrated a statistically significant increase in salivary pH toward alkalinity, accompanied by a noticeable reduction in PI and GI scores. In contrast, Group II showed only minimal changes in salivary pH, despite moderate improvements in plaque and gingival indices. Conclusion: The findings suggest that salt-balanced alkaline mouthwash is effective in improving salivary pH and enhancing oral hygiene among diabetic patients. It can serve as a beneficial adjunct to conventional periodontal therapy, contributing to better maintenance of oral health in individuals with diabetes.
