A Phenomenological Study on the Dropout Experiences and Meanings of Elite Soccer Players Not Reaching the Pro Level
This study aimed to provide practical data to support policy development and preventive strategies for soccer player at risk of dropout by deeply exploring the dropout process and its meaning among soccer players who failed to transition to professional levels. Using a phenomenological approach, data was collected from in-depth semi-structured interview with 8 participants. The collected data were analyzed using the phenomenological research method proposed by Colaizzi(1978). The dropout experiences and its meanings were classified into 6 categories, 15 theme clusters, and 32 themes. The primary categories included: ‘The reality of uncertain environments,’ ‘Accumulated struggles,’ ‘Athletes at a crossroads,’ ‘Fragments of unfulfilled journeys,’ ‘An end mark, yet a breath,’ and ‘A journey toward greater horizons.’ The findings emphasize the multidimensional interplay of individual, interpersonal, institutional, and cultural factors contributing to the decision to dropout soccer. Based on these results, the study proposes systematic psychological support and policy discussions tailored to the sociocultural context of soccer players in South Korea.
