CRISPR : A CRISPY WAY TO DEAL WITH ORAL DISEASES
CRISPR, an acronym for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats, refers to a sophisticated, programmable system capable of editing, silencing, or regulating gene expression. Among the various genome-editing platforms available, the CRISPR-Cas9 (CRISPR-associated protein 9) system has emerged as the most widely adopted due to its precision, efficiency, and versatility in introducing sequence-specific modifications. This advanced technology holds significant promise for a broad spectrum of biomedical applications, including transformative advancements in oral healthcare. Furthermore, the scope of gene editing has expanded beyond targeted modifications to include genome-wide functional screening for both gene loss-of-function and gain-of-function studies. This review provides an overview of the CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing system and its emerging applications in the field of dentistry.
