Leadership in troubled waters

The American Chemical Society, like other organizations in the US and indeed around the world, is currently navigating a rapidly changing and highly challenging environment. The physical environment itself has changed even within my lifetime, with the climate warming and the living organisms of the earth struggling to adapt to these rapid changes. The political environment through which we proceed is very different and feels much less predictable. At all times, but especially in difficult times such as these, leadership is critical. The Committee on Nominations (N&E) is sensitive to these needs and seeks to respond effectively. One area in which N&E has sought to evolve is in the frequency of communication and the depth of conversation with society governing groups for which we are responsible, particularly regarding the nomination of candidates for election. We are conversing with ACS Board leaders on a regular basis, asking about the needs of the board. The society generates nearly a billion dollars of revenue per year. Therefore, financial management skills on the board are absolutely crucial. Doubt is being sown daily about the value of scientific research, scientific findings, and even the value and nature of truth itself. Thus, there is a pressing need for effective advocates for chemistry and science on the board. The ACS Board needs members with experience in ACS governance, but perhaps it is not crucial that all board members have such a pedigree. In these times, having great strength in financial matters, advocating for chemistry, working with government leaders,
