Modeling and control of large-scale frequency-dependent loads for local mode oscillations damping

This paper investigates the influence of frequencydependent loads (FDLs) to damp the local mode oscillations in the large grid. The investigation focuses on FDLs connected to the secondary bus of the step-up transformer. Thereafter, a small-signal model of a synchronous generator is developed using actual plant measurements. Subsequently, a power system stabilizer is designed based on this model, taking into account nearby connected FDLs. Simulation results are presented through eigenvalues and oscillatory dynamics, and the proposed model’s effectiveness is validated on widely used IEEE 39-bus and IEEE 68-bus power systems. The study employs both frequency domain analysis and time domain simulations, under a wide range of system contingencies. In essence, the paper aims to enhance power grid stability by leveraging FDLs, providing practical insights through modeling and simulation on standard power system test cases.
