DIWASWAP AND ITS ROLE IN THE PATHOGENESIS OF MEDOROGA AMONG HOUSEWIVES
Medoroga (obesity) is one of the major lifestyle disorders of the 21st century, affecting women disproportionately, especially housewives with sedentary routines. Diwaswap-daytime sleep-is described in Ayurveda as a significant factor that disrupts doshic balance, particularly by aggravating Kapha and Meda Dhatu. Obesity (obesity and related metabolic disorders) is increasingly prevalent among Indian housewives due to sedentary lifestyles and irregular daily routines. Ayurveda identifies Diwaswap (daytime sleep) as a key Viharaja Nidana(behavioural cause) of Medoroga, as it aggravates Kapha Dosha, suppresses Agni, and leads to Medo Dhatu Vriddhi. Modern science similarly correlates postprandial naps and prolonged daytime rest with circadian rhythm disturbances, insulin resistance, and hormonal imbalance. Preventive measures such as Nidana Parivarjana, Ahara-Vihara Paripalana, Udvartana, and Shodhana Chikitsa are emphasised for effective lifestyle modification. The paper concludes that lifestyle modifications aligned with Dinacharya, improved sleep hygiene, and metabolic activation practices like Vyayama and Abhyanga are critical preventive measures.
