Understanding mild steel corrosion in sulpuric acid environment and It's protection using of gamma-irradiated yam (Dioscorea rotundata species) peel powder
The research evaluates corrosion inhibition effect of gamma-irradiated yam peel powder (GIYPP) on mild steel in 0.5 M H2SO4 using physical and electrochemical technique respectively. GIYPP exhibited anticorrosion characteristic behaviour with efficiency value of 93 % obtained at 1.2 g/L, 24 h and ±30 °C. The efficiency of GIYPP relied on time, concentration and temperature conditions respectively according to weight loss results while Langmuir isotherm model suggesting physical process and mono layer formation was an output of adsorption studies. Electrochemical results agree with physical measurement results, polarization data confirmed mixed protection mechanism and impedance data revealed evidence of protection on metal surface via adsorption. Surface analyses showed that protection offered by GIYPP is attributed to extension of adsorbed inhibited molecules on metal surface. Finally, treatment of inhibited material using gamma-irradiation technique served as a vital means for preserving the biodegradable yam peel powder for future use in solving corrosion problems.
