LaCoO3-Based Medium-Entropy Perovskite Electrocatalysts for Zn/Air Batteries with Improved Cycling Capabilities and Durability

We synthesized LaCoO3 perovskites and a stable medium-entropy derivative containing five metal cations. The medium-entropy perovskite presents a significant improvement over the simple LaCoO3 for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions, with over 50 and 170 mV improvements in overpotentials, respectively. The materials were implemented as bifunctional electrocatalysts in Zn/air batteries, demonstrating excellent cycling stability for over 400 cycles. The cells employing the multication perovskite show a 2-fold improvement in the specific capacity. Furthermore, the cycling potential is practically constant over several weeks of cycling with the medium-entropy perovskite. All these properties highlight the potential of these multication perovskites for their application in sustainable energy storage devices such as Zn/air batteries.
