Towards Smart Cities with AI-CAM: Assisted by Infrastructure Cooperative Awareness Messages
Modern vehicular communication technology plays a pivotal role in Intelligent Transportation Systems, enabling low-latency, vehicle-to-everything communication. A key component of safety applications is the dissemination of Cooperative Awareness Messages, which allow vehicles to share real-time status information to improve collision avoidance and traffic efficiency. Additional situational awareness is provided by Cooperative Perception System messages, where vehicles integrate data from onboard cameras with their Advanced Driver Assistance Systems to extend perception beyond line-of-sight limitations.Despite the advantages of CAMs and CPS messages, the decentralized nature of their dissemination poses challenges such as redundancy, network congestion, and limited perception in complex urban environments. To address these limitations, we propose an infrastructure-based approach that centralizes CAM dissemination. Leveraging a novel infrastructure deployed at the MASA Living Lab, our solution enhances vehicular communication by aggregating and distributing CAMs through a dedicated roadside system. This approach improves message reliability, reduces redundant transmissions, and optimizes network efficiency, ultimately contributing to safer and more efficient Intelligent Transportation Systems.
